Especially Aelfwine's. I'm rereading The Lost Road at the moment and that's also a very intriguing way of doing it - if Tolkien had written the whole thing as planned, it would have featured a father and son in many different ages, going back through various myths and times of the world, tracing the history of England. Sigh. I'd love to create something like that.

Which leads me to say, yes you should write the kind of story you love!! If nothing else there are definitely others out there - like me! - who prefer the old magical style of fantasy writing, as opposed to the 'realistic' stuff that seems to be written now...Deniz Bevanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17134553551048836979noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3614806041076628929.post-47174735095337250122013-01-18T13:56:39.250-08:002013-01-18T13:56:39.250-08:00I like your closing comment. I'm gonna go back (again) to George MacDonald (because I know you're familiar with him). He never "made it" with his writing. He's not even someone you could call a B-list writer, and, today, almost no one has heard of him; yet, he was a huge influence on Lewis and Tolkien, so their stories may not exist if not for him. I'd say it was well worth it that he wrote.Andrew Leonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13964775673414653644noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3614806041076628929.post-63568263731959810162013-01-16T15:17:25.673-08:002013-01-16T15:17:25.673-08:00Major awesomeness points to Michael and Andrew for...Major awesomeness points to Michael and Andrew for actually being familiar with one of my all time favorite TV shows! :)Sarah McCabehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10985261436020635823noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3614806041076628929.post-44477911381122109572013-01-16T15:10:53.079-08:002013-01-16T15:10:53.079-08:00Glad to have confirmation that I'm not the onl...Glad to have confirmation that I'm not the only one. :)Sarah McCabehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10985261436020635823noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3614806041076628929.post-34847663360603776342013-01-16T15:09:54.508-08:002013-01-16T15:09:54.508-08:00No I couldn't do that either. I have strayed away from traditionally published fantasy (with the exception of George R.R. Martin) mostly because I find it unfulfilling these days. I mean, you have to like it -first-, and, if you don't like it, there's no point in doing it. I can't even imagine trying to write a book just to appeal to the audience if I don't like it. Then, if they don't like it, no one likes it.Andrew Leonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13964775673414653644noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3614806041076628929.post-33333116761669582902013-01-16T11:26:47.191-08:002013-01-16T11:26:47.191-08:00I'm listening to the Hobbit soundtrack right n...I'm listening to the Hobbit soundtrack right now, so your post was quite timely. :-)

I for one would LOVE to write these kinds of stories ... but I can't. It's not in me. I can't 'imagine' in that many layers. So if YOU can do it, and you've a desire to do it, why wouldn't you?

No one has ever needed permission to write a story, just to publish it to a world audience. That has changed. So if your ambition is to simply write a story and share it with as many people as you can, there's never been a better time. And so long as you pour your heart and soul into it, you WILL find readers who enjoy your craft. I can promise you that.

Now, if your ambition is to make a fortune off of your writing, or to have legions of fans, perhaps you'll need a different kind of story. But you have to start somewhere, and figuring out what will be popular is fickle science at best, so I'd not spend much time thinking on it. Instead, write what you want to write, the best way you know how to write it, and share it when it's ready.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00273059558675234923noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3614806041076628929.post-86055027059812292952013-01-16T09:58:21.511-08:002013-01-16T09:58:21.511-08:00Ironically I think you are right about the two typ...Ironically I think you are right about the two types of books that publishers want.
Write the story you want, Sarah. I like a lot of the older fantasy, just as I like some of the older science fiction. (Such as the Conan and John Carter of Mars series.) I would definitely read it.
He's horror, but Lovecraft created an entire mythos as well.Alex J. Cavanaughhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09770065693345181702noreply@blogger.com
